IVF: In Vitro Fertilization in India

This article is using Mumbai as location reference (“IVF Center In Mumbai” as an example), but all the information contained is applicable in all locations in India.

ART (IVF being an example) is a solution to a problem that has haunted many people worldwide for many years. Assisted reproductive technology (ART) has allowed many people to start families despite fertility problems and other complications.

The most common form of ART these days is In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), the process of which we will break down into five simple steps:

    1. Stimulation or superovulation: Simply, inducing the female to release more than one egg in 28 days. This medicine known as fertility drugs are administered to the woman to promote egg production. Transvaginal ultrasounds and blood tests are performed during this time to examine the ovaries and check hormone levels.
    2. Retrieval of the egg: a follicular aspiration, a minor surgery performed in the doctor’s office, is done to remove the eggs from the woman’s body.
    3. Insemination and fertilization: The egg is now inseminated (inserted) and stored in an environmentally controlled chamber. The sperm often fertilizes the egg within a few hours.

If the doctor believes the chances of fertilization are low, they may perform an intracytoplasmic sperm injection.
    4. Embryo culture: when the fertilized egg divides, it becomes an embryo, which, usually within five days, has several cells that are actively dividing. If there is concern about genetic disorders, doctors will perform a pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). PGDs can determine any potential problems and allows the chance to choose an embryo that doesn’t have the hereditary disorder.
    5. Embryo transfer: The doctor places the embryos into the woman’s womb, usually 3 to 5 days after the fertilization.

The average IVF center in Mumbai will charge 2,000,000 to 3,000,000 Indian Rupees ($25,000 – $40,000USD)

    History of IVF in India

India has had a complicated history with IVF, starting in the late 1970s with the second-ever “test-tube baby” in the world: Kanupriya Agarwal. Because of the controversial nature of IVF, there has been endless discussion of ethics about any form of ART, especially due to India’s highly religious nature. If you wish to read about the complex history of IVF in India here is a fantastic article that outlines all details and has plenty of references.

    Cost of IVF in India

The cost of IVF in India ranges broadly. It depends on which location and the clinic you choose

The average IVF center in Mumbai will charge 2,000,000 to 3,000,000 Indian Rupees ($25,000 – $40,000USD), whereas the same procedure in Kolkatta can cost as little as 65,000 to 80,000 Rupees ($900 – $1,100USD).

These prices are estimates and do not include medicines or blood tests. (Source

    Several factors determine the cost:

    • Age and number of treatments needed
    • The cost of donor sperm, eggs, or embryos (if necessary)
    • The rate of testicular sperm aspiration (TESA)
    • The rate of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)
    • Cost of freezing embryos

Despite this, the cost of IVF in India is substantially cheaper than elsewhere in the world. Although it is reasonably priced, you can generally expect professional service. Wherever you decide, be sure to do your due diligence and consider all possible costs before deciding.

Since its inception in 1978, IVF has allowed 6 million “test tube” babies into this world and has given hope to millions of couples worldwide.

How To Find A Reputable Clinic

If you are in Mumbai you can start your search on Google with “IVF Center In Mumbai”. Mumbai has many very successful clinics.

For other locations, simply change the city name.

    Increasing Chances of Success

There are many variables when it comes to IVF. Here are some ways you can increase success:

    1. Eliminate any harmful substances from your life, such as smoking, alcohol, and legal/illegal narcotics.
    2. Maintain a healthy weight through a balance of healthy eating and cardio-based exercise.
    3. Optimize sperm health through a healthy diet and the use of multivitamins. Maintaining a healthy weight can also positively impact this.
    4. Minimizing stress differs for each person, but such things as mind-body programs like meditation or yoga can help.

Ask your doctor about taking supplements. Around 40% of adults worldwide are vitamin D deficient, ensure you’re getting all the nutrients you need during this time.

The Future of IVF in India

Since its inception in 1978, IVF has allowed 6 million “test tube” babies into this world and has given hope to millions of couples worldwide.

The current estimated success rates are between 30% and 35%. However, due to a lack of regulations, many clinics have claimed much higher success rates. This deception has resulted in a lot of disappointment.

The Assisted Technology Reproduction Bill introduced in 2017 aims to fix this by requiring all clinics to report their data to a central registry. This information can then be accessed by people wishing to pursue an IVF. To read more about this and the future of IVF in India, read here
