Surrogacy- All You Need To Know

The use of a surrogate mother to have a baby is also controversial. The legal system is also confusing because it differs from one state to the other. Surrogacy is still a choice for you and your partner, whether it’s due to fertility issues or other factors.

In this article, Dr Mohit Saraogi who is known for the best IVF treatment along with surrogacy in Mumbai will discuss everything you should know about surrogacy.

    What Is a Surrogate Mother?

There are two types of surrogate mother:

Traditional surrogate- It is the conventional mode of surrogacy which is mostly used in India. A woman is artificially inseminated with the sperm of father. They will then hold and deliver the baby to you and your husband to raise.

The biological mother of the baby is a traditional surrogate. Since the father’s sperm fertilized their egg, this is the case. It’s also possible to use sperm from a donor.

Gestational surrogates- It is now possible to collect eggs from the mother, fertilize them with sperm from the father, and implant the embryo into the uterus of a gestational surrogate using a technique known as “in vitro fertilization” (IVF).

The baby is then borne by the surrogate before it is born. Since it wasn’t their egg that was used, they have no genetic links to the boy. The “birth mother” is the name given to a gestational surrogate. However, the biological mother is the woman whose egg was fertilized.

Surrogacy is still a choice for you and your partner, whether it’s due to fertility issues or other factors.

    Who Makes Use of Surrogates?

Being a woman, if you are planing to opt for IVF treatment in Mumbai, India you might think of using a gestational surrogate for a variety of reasons:

    • Your uterus is causing you problems.
    • Your uterus was removed during a hysterectomy.
    • Conditions such as serious heart disease that render pregnancy impossible or dangerous for you
    • If you’ve attempted but failed to conceive using various assisted-reproduction methods, such as IVF, you may want to suggest surrogacy.

Surrogates have also opened up parenthood to people who may not otherwise be eligible to adopt a child due to their age or marital status.

If gay men want to use a conventional surrogate, one of them uses artificial insemination to fertilize the surrogate’s egg with his or her sperm. The surrogate then carries and gives birth to the child.

A gay couple could also select an egg donor, fertilize the donated egg, and then implant the embryo in a gestational surrogate to bear until the baby is born.

    Searching for a Surrogate

You will find a surrogate mother in a variety of ways: Friends or family members- You may also ask a friend or relative to serve as your proxy. It’s a contentious topic. However, due to the high cost of surrogacy and the difficult legal problems concerning parental rights that it poses, a tried-and-true family partnership could be easier to handle. Surrogacy is commonly discouraged if the child’s genes are identical to those of a child born of incest between close relatives.

A surrogacy agency- A surrogacy agency is a company that helps people become parents by surrogacy. The majority of people use one to find a gestational surrogate mother. An organization will assist you in locating a surrogate and making the appropriate arrangements. It also receives any payments that are transferred between you and the surrogate, such as medical costs.

What to Look for in a Surrogate

There are currently no restrictions on who may be a surrogate mother. However, experts differ on a few points when it comes to choosing one.

    • Surrogates who are at least 21 years old should be accepted.
    • Have given birth to at least one healthy infant, so they’re familiar with the medical complications of pregnancy and childbirth, as well as the emotional challenges of bonding with a newborn.
    • Have passed a psychological evaluation by a mental health professional to rule out any problems with giving up the baby after birth.
    • Sign a contract outlining their position and duties during the pregnancy, such as providing prenatal care and promising to give the baby to you after birth.

    Using a Surrogate

    • Surrogates should undergo a medical test to ensure that they can deliver a stable, full-term infant. They should get tests for infectious diseases like syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, HIV, cytomegalovirus, and hepatitis B and C, according to the organization.
    • Surrogates should be screened for measles, rubella (German measles), and chickenpox to ensure they are resistant. You may also suggest that they undergo a medical test to visually “trace” their uterus, which will allow the doctor to assess their ability to bear a pregnancy. Rather than using your doctor, surrogate mothers should see their own doctor during pregnancy.
